Sample characterization is a key component part of our research. Sample characterization takes place either in the lab, through colleagues at the BEG, or through outside vendors.
In House:
• grain size analysis
• Atterberg tests
• specific surface area
• thin sections analysisAt the BEG http://www.beg.utexas.edu/sem/NanoSEM.html:
• scanning electron microscopy (SEM)
• gas adsorptionOutside Labs:
• confined and unconfined mercury injection capillary pressure (MICP)
• specific surface area
• crushed rock permeability (often referred to as GRI)
• steady state permeability
• high-resolution x-ray texture goniometry (HRXTG)
