Abstract
Much of the data collected over decades of academic geosciences research can become like so many of the life forms that ever existed in Earth’s deep history — lost to time except for the scant fossil record now requiring forensics to understand. No Earth system is in isolation, so understanding of this data also depends on context - the relationships between data granules and data sets, sometimes across institutional and disciplinary boundaries. This presentation is about recent advancements in information models and linked data that are enabling geoscientists to better connect their subjects of research into the emerging web of knowledge. This, in turn, is enabling us to ask better and more kinds of science questions.
