Navigating Landscapes of Scientific Practice: The Importance of Effective Communicators in the Geosciences

By:
Adam Papendieck, Jackson School of Geosciences Technical Communications Specialist

Abstract
As geoscientists are increasingly called upon to articulate and address highly complex problems via interdisciplinary, inter-institutional and international communities of practice, their ability to effectively communicate scientific research and technical knowledge to diverse audiences has become critical. In a survey of over 400 members of the geoscientific community presented by Sharon Mosher at the 2016 Future of Undergraduate Geoscience Education Summit in Austin, the ability to “communicate effectively to scientists and non-scientists” was identified as the second most important set of skills to be developed among young geoscientists out of a list of thirteen. The first part of this talk will outline a programmatic approach to developing a community of good communicators at the Jackson School of Geosciences. The second part will present specific guidance for JSG students on effective poster design and presentation, emphasizing poster symposia as unique opportunities to communicate and connect across “landscapes” of scientific practice.
