Abstract
The
Mississippi River is at the center of the issue of coastal restoration and
hurricane protection in Louisiana. The river is being trumpeted as the sediment
source for addressing the proposed massive public works effort. This has setup
a situation where the scientific community is struggling to provide the
decision-makers with the "how", "where" and "with what effect" about sediment
removal from the lower river. The focus of this tech talk with be on our recent
efforts to improve the basic scientific understanding of sedimentary processes
in the lower Mississippi River to address these applied scientific issues.
